10 Incredible Classic Rock Albums We Never Got To Hear
8. Household Objects - Pink Floyd
Ever since the band's inception, Pink Floyd always had the reputation of being the single weirdest prog band in the mainstream. Though all the band's records were meant as album experiences, that didn't stop them from rising up the charts, eventually giving them their biggest mainstream breakthrough in Dark Side of the Moon. Where most bands would try to recapture the formula, Floyd wanted to go even stranger.
The band wanted to strip things back to minimalistic production. No gimmicks, no structure, and not even real instruments. In an attempt to use the studio as an instrument, Floyd wanted to make an experimental album that would only incorporate the sounds of everyday appliances like glasses, rubber bands, and other household items. The band had even laid down two songs for the record, but the idea proved to be too experimental to be taken seriously by the label.
Given their weather-beaten attitude towards touring life, the band channeled their energy into making another masterpiece with Wish You Were Here, which incorporated bits and pieces of the experimental material for songs like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Any other band would have been laughed out of the room if they pitched this idea to their label, but in Pink Floyd's case, it may been an idea just outlandish enough to work.
