1. Slide Away
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ei6YQchGZg 'Slide Away' is probably the most popular album track among the general Oasis fanbase; it's placed towards the end of seminal album 'Definitely Maybe' (and probably should've closed the whole record), was a staple of the setlist in the band's later years, and was perhaps the truest, most heartfelt love song that Noel ever penned, and that Liam ever sang on. Originally written on a guitar that former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr lent to Noel, the title and entire concept of the song was purely born out of the fact that The Verve also happened to have a song called 'Slide Away'. As the two bands were good friends, frequently touring with each other, Gallagher and Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft allegedly had a competition to see who could write the best song under that title. Seen by many as the other side of 'Live Forever''s coin, the lyrical content of Gallagher's composition touched upon his stormy relationship with his then-girlfriend, and revealed a sweeter side to a band that had largely been known for its hooliganism and laddish behaviour up until then. Despite record label insistence that 'Slide Away' be the fifth single from the album, Noel was adamant that it was 'ridiculous' for any band to release five singles off of a debut record. Fast forward to 2014, and pretty much every band is doing just that, but there we go. It's hard to imagine Oasis becoming any bigger than they already did, but putting out 'Slide Away' as a single - with its call and response refrain, wailing guitar solos, and heart-rending lyrics - would've only elevated them even more.
