10 Incredible Songs That Took NO Time To Write

3. The Jam - That's Entertainment

Paul Weller has always been blessed with an ability to find the beautiful in the humdrum.

The mod legend’s eye for an evocative image, and his knack for crafting verses that are at once familiar and yet revelatory have cemented his place as one of the most important and unassuming British rockstars of all time, and his work was no doubt a precursor and influence on the likes of Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, and more recently, Idles lyricist Joe Talbot.

One of the best examples of Weller’s gift surely comes in the form of acoustic-led anthem That’s Entertainment. A fleeting sketch of the grind and momentary reliefs of working class life, the no-nonsense songwriter claims to have penned the much-loved tune in just 10 minutes flat while under the influence of something or other.

He probably isn’t making that up either.
