10 Legendary Albums That Fans Originally Hated
7. 808s & Heartbreak - Kanye West
In a post Graduation world, Kanye West was now at the top of the hip hop food chain. As tracks like Stronger made their way to the top of the charts and blew 50 Cent's Curtis out of the water, it looked like Ye was about to usher in a new golden age of hip hop that no one had heard before. Things can change though when life ends up getting in the way.
After separating from his fiance and the loss of his mother a few months after Graduation dropped, Kanye poured all of his sorrow into 808s & Heartbreak, which barely even counted as a hip hop record. Drenching everything in glitchy sounds and Autotune, this felt like Ye abandoning everything that made him charismatic in the first place, replacing the smart ass hip hop beats with something that sounded distant and sterile.
In the years since, Kanye should probably be given credit for birthing every single version of emo rap that has come up in the meantime, as rappers have become more lenient to using vocal manipulation and talking about their internal feelings. Even when he and Drake went head to head last year, Mr. Graham could probably thank Kanye for launching his career, with some of his first mixtapes featuring beats taken from this album directly. The bling era was officially over, and it was time for some superstars to open themselves up a bit more.
