10 Legendary Music Artists That Never Got Better Than Their Debut Record

9. The Doors

Considering their weird approach to music, the Doors feel like they should be in their own category of rock and roll. Jim Morrison always thought of himself more of a poet than a singer from the first time he walked up to the microphone, and it was anyone's guess what they would sound like from one song to the next, touching on the worlds of jazz and blues music. On their first record though, they seemed to say it all for the Flower Generation in just under an hour.

When the band actually came in to record though, Morrison was not a trained vocalist by any stretch, just going for the throat and singing from the heart while the rest of the band followed behind him. What happened on here though was a certain synergy that can only come when you're just starting out, like casually inventing the idea of hard rock on songs like Break On Through while also extending some of their epic songs to massive proportions like the album closer The End.

From this point on, the band would get a lot more polished in the studio, bringing in different session players as well as adding orchestral arrangements on songs like Touch Me. For the most part, this album is just what the Doors managed to do live, and it felt like a transcendental experience whenever it came out of the speakers.
