10 Legendary Rock Shows In Music History

2. Daft Punk At Coachella

Being a part of an electronic music act, you’re going to need to do something a little bit extra if you want to grab the people in a live setting. The kind of techno that you got back in the early ‘90s may have worked great for raves, but there’s no telling how that would translate once you get in front of a festivals’ worth of people. For the return of Daft Punk in the ‘00s though, their performance at Coachella was nothing short of legendary.

Going through the setlist, both robots work off each other perfectly, interpolating most of their greatest hits in a completely natural way, giving echoes of what would eventually become part of Alive 2007. While it may have been easy to just line up a collection of hits and program them back to back, what makes the show work so well is how they mash up different songs, taking some of the abrasiveness of an album like Human After All and mashing those tracks with the glossy production of Discovery.

Of all the highlights of this performance though, the biggest blessing is that there’s practically no official video footage of it. All that most of us have to go on for this gig is the footage that fans had recorded from the crowd, which makes the moment feel that much more special when you’re seeing it play out in real time. This isn’t necessarily the same showmanship as something like David Lee Roth or anything, but it doesn’t need to be either. Watching the footage of this show feels like you’re right there in the audience as these cyborgs open up different doors in your mind that you thought were slammed shut.
