10 Legends That Guested On Hard Rock Songs
8. You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette
In the world of alternative rock, Alanis Morrissette always seemed to be looked at as a bit removed from her peers. When most other female rockers were taking the riot grrl approach, her snarky way with words and knack for killer hooks turned her into one of the godmothers of alternative. She did have her vicious streak when she wanted to, and she brought in the cavalry to lay into her ex on You Oughta Know.
At the time though, you wouldn’t have known that this song had an all star lineup until you actually looked at the liner notes. Years before he would end up as the heartbeat of the Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins is actually behind the kit for this song, serving as her session drummer and leathering the crap out of the skins. Though some of the subtle touches come courtesy of her producer Glen Ballard, the Red Hot Chili Peppers also have their fingerprints all over this song, with Flea on bass for most of the tune and Dave Navarro adding in his own tone bending solo towards the end of the song, complete with a wah wah and bends that sound like they’re being choked right as they are starting.
You don’t really get the teeth behind this song until you hear the solo version of Flea though, laying into his bass and having just the right lick to bring the verses back in. Though some may have been skeptical of Alanis’ alternative credibility back in the day, she had excellent taste when it came time to let her fangs out.
