10 Lost Albums That Were Released Years Later
4. Eros - Deftones
When you're working on any kind of project, you have tomake sure that every band member can stay in the right headspace at the same time. For all you know, this could be the final time you're in the studio, so you always want to make sure you give it the best shot you can. Then again, circumstances can always change things.
During the recording for Deftones' next album, tentatively titled Eros, bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a horrific car crash, which left him comatose for the next few years until he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Although the last thing that the band had on their minds was recording, they still had half of an album unfinished and a commitment to make to their label.
Instead of continuing on with the tapes they had, they settled on making a return to form with Diamond Eyes, which ended up becoming a huge second wind for the group on the critical scene. Still, we have seen a bit of a release of Eros years later, with sources leaking a good chunk of the tapes to see where the band was at for the follow up to Saturday Night Wrist. If they had put out something half hearted after Chi's passing though, it would have seemed a lot more disingenuous by comparison.
