10 Love Songs That Are Actually Incredibly Dark

3. Pulling Teeth - Green Day

One of the biggest strengths that you have as a songwriter is putting your song in the right context. Even if there's a lot of strange stuff to talk about, it's up to you whether you're going to make your story into a comedy rather than a tragedy. And on Pulling Teeth, Billie Joe Armstrong managed to make the most out of a bad situation, even when that situation involves kidnapping.

Inspired by a real life fight that Mike Dirnt had with his girlfriend while making Dookie, Pulling Teeth is about a guy who takes it like a champ every time his girlfriend beats the life out of him. Though Mike's situation only had to do with him accidentally breaking his elbows during a pillow fight, Billie takes the situation a little bit further, with this guy being so tattered and torn than he can barely even stand up properly. Even though he's getting fed by this girl, he spends his days locked in a room and being forced to say 'I Love You' if he doesn't want to be hurt again.

For all of the drama surrounding it though, the tune itself is one of the most carefree sounds on Dookie, almost as if Green Day are trying their hand at a Motown style of song. If we're talking about it from the perspective in the story though, this is the kind of song that gives movies like Misery a run for their money.
