10 Major Albums Where Everything Went Wrong
5. Jesus is King - Kanye West
90% of the reason why Kanye West is followed these days comes from the controversial things that he puts out in the media. Though there has been a bit of a firestorm towards him as of late, most of the great work to come from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and 808s and Heartbreak have as much to do with Ye's personal life as the music itself. As much as you felt like you were getting a peek into his mind, Jesus Is King is the one project where Yeezy feels at arm's length.
Looking to reinvent himself with the Sunday Service Gospel Choir, this entire album feels like the solar antithesis of what Ye had served up with the Life of Pablo just a few years earlier. Rather than trying to rationalize his difficult relationship with faith, this is just a praise and worship album with Ye appearing just enough times to constitute him having full ownership over it.
Even the songs that almost work like Closed on Sunday are reduced to nothing when you hear him sneaking in references to Chic Fil A. If there's anything that warrants criticism in hip hop, it's being unconvincing, and you can practically feel the cynicism through the speakers here. Also, if this is any sign of Ye's new religious conversion going forward, we may be in for even more halfhearted gospel records coming down the pipeline. Yay....?
