10 Major Albums Where Everything Went Wrong
4. Saturday Night Wrist - Deftones
In the age where nu metal felt like it was breathing its dying breath, Deftones still stood out as pretty damn good amongst their peers. Then again, Deftones were always nu metal adjacent ever since they started, incorporating everything from shoegaze to alternative rock into their sound ever since albums like Around the Fur. Though their self-titled record showed them moving in even more experimental territory, Saturday Night Wrist starts to show the years wearing on them a bit.
It doesn't really look that way on paper though, considering the background that was happening for this album. Looking to write lyrics as a dissection of the overuse of drugs, this felt like an extension of what we had gotten used to on records like White Pony. With super producer Bob Ezrin in tow, Saturday Night Wrist ended up going through a bit of a production hell, as everyone failed to get on the same page for a majority of the record.
This would only prove to be the start of the decline for Deftones too, as the months following this record would involve the tragic car accident of bassist Chi Cheng, which would ultimately claim his life in the years that would follow. Diamond Eyes may have been just around the corner, but those kind of records always tend to come from a place of great pain first.
