10 Messiest Band Splits In Rock Music History
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers
The everyday life of a rock star isn't something that you necessarily want to get into. Even though the thought of going around the world playing music for a living seems intriguing at first, having cameras and paparazzi on you 24/7 has got to weight on you at some point. Especially if you're someone who wasn't used to fame to begin with, you're going to snap eventually.
After the release of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Red Hot Chili Peppers had reached a level of fame that no one was prepared for, becoming one of the biggest names in music alongside the alternative revolution of Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Once the tour kicked into high gear though, John Frusciante was getting more and more uncomfortable, since he originally signed on thinking the Peppers would remain an underground band.
The last few shows Frusciante played ended up being agonizing to watch, from a disastrous performance on SNL to eventually deciding to leave the band right as they were about to go on stage in Japan. While they were able to get through that particular show, Frusciante was out the minute the last note sounded, leaving the Peppers without a guitar player yet again. Considering how amped the Chilis' live shows can be, it just feels disheartening knowing they had to play as a band divided.
