10 Metal Albums That Should Have Been Great (But Totally Weren't)
4. Lou Reed And Metallica - Lulu
This entry is going to be quick and painless (mostly), because at this point complaining about Lulu (2011) is like beating a dead horse with another dead horse. Everyone knows how bizarre this album is, and it is on this list because it truly doesn't do the godly legacies of either Metallica or Lou Reed any justice.
But, unlike the millions of internet trolls that insist they hate "new" Metallica despite simultaneously still following them on every social media platform, let's examine the positives of Lulu.
Because this is not a metal record. This is not a Metallica record. This is an art rock record, but above that, it is a Lou Reed record. Metallica saw a chance to work with their idol on an album and, like anyone else in the same situation with one of their heroes, they took it.
There's no evidence to prove this sentiment, but I solemnly believe Lou Reed would have eventually ended up making this album even if Metallica turned down appearing on it, as it his creativity and poetry driving the entire thing.
In the end, this was a creative output that gave both Metallica and Reed a stunning opportunity to make something different. After all, by this point in time, Metallica had been making straight-forward metal for precisely thirty years.
Wouldn't you want to try something different by that point too?
