10 Metal Bands That Went Acoustic
9. The Bard's Song - Blind Guardian
When most people think of power metal, slowing down the tempo doesn't really show anyone in the best light. As far as the likes of Rainbow are concerned, the best kind of power metal is the type that makes you want to throw on a loincloth and wield your broadsword as you go out to slay a mythical dragon looming over the horizon. Even in the mythical countryside though, there are a few peaks and valleys, and it doesn't get any more serene than The Bard's Song.
Operating as a bit of a respite from the usual Blind Guardian material, this is the kind of song that feels like it's been ripped straight out of the 16th century, almost like it's some sort of old wise tale that's been passed on through generations. As much as the construction might be acoustic to start with though, this is still a metal song at the end of the day.
Bringing out the more lofty sounding vocal accentuations, these guys have the chops to craft a compelling melody while still showing the restraint of knowing when to stop before going to over the top with it. As much as this kind of thing should have fallen on its face, it's actually got a lot more chops than you realize. It's a touch melodramatic, but when it comes to power metal, it sometimes pays to have that kind of attitude.
