10 Metal Bands Who Made 5 Great Albums In A Row
7. Mastodon
Mastodon have been best boys of the press for the past twenty years now, being reviewed with absolute pleasure by rock institutions and often featuring at number one on many an album of the year list they’re eligible for.
The band have spent the time since their 2002 debut Remission blending genres and styles to create a unique sound that incorporates everything from prog-rock, stoner and grindcore. They’re true metal visionaries.
They started with incredible ambition and it’s all over Remission: the album is dark, full of Thin Lizzy lovin’ and avant-garde as hell.
What came next is often cited as their masterpiece in 2004's Leviathan, a concept album inspired by Herman Melville’s Moby Dick: gloomy, supernatural and bombastic, the record is the thinking man's delight, packed with musical excellence to make it a treat for all.
Mastodon continued their fiery experimentation on Blood Mountain (2006) before delving into the proggier lands of Opeth on Crack the Skye (2009). Ending the five-album run (but not ending Mastodon’s run of great albums) was The Hunter (2011) which took a sharp U-turn from the lengthy weight of Crack the Skye and showed the band at their trippy, swaggering best.
