10 Metal Cover Songs That Sound Nothing Like The Original

7. Sound of Silence - Disturbed

Whenever you decide to cover a song, you need to be careful when you're taking on a classic. Since the original will already be placed in high regard throughout the rock landscape, some of the worst cover songs end up making the original hard to listen to (looking at you, Limp Bizkit). Disturbed didn't leave Simon and Garfunkel in shaky hands though...they just brought out the vicious side of things.

Outside of the memes present nowadays, there's an added sense of melancholy to the original Sound of Silence, which is brought to the forefront through the great sense of contrast used in this version. Even though there's a million ways to screw up something like this, Disturbed start off slow before building across every verse, getting more and more vicious with every single word.

By the time we finally reach the ending verses, you can hear David Draiman reaching into the highest parts of his range, making the listener hang on every single word as if it were the fate of the universe to hear them. It would seem that the author thought so too, with Paul Simon actually giving his approval of the track shortly after hearing it for the first time. Something like this shouldn't really work on paper, let alone be fairly compelling, but no rock song can get past the common thread of grief.
