10 Modern Albums That Prove Psychedelia Is Alive And Well
6. Flying Lotus - You're Dead!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak4vLEBxIo4Flying Lotus' fifth album is an exploration of death's inevitability that spans several genres for a warm musical experience. Regarding a topic often treated with a great deal of weight, the album approaches mortality with a distinct sense of humor. Every musical idea thrown into its 38 minutes provides for a fever dream of death and finality.
Ever since 2010's Cosmogramma, Flying Lotus has been creating some of the most experimental efforts in instrumental music today, and You're Dead! is a culmination of his past efforts. His signature bizarre electronics merge with a colorful live jazz setup, which features artists such as Herbie Hancock, Thundercat, and Kamasi Washington adding to the album's palette.
The album's introspection is of a full-volume variety. It is loud, up front, and attacks the listener with every successive song. Peak moments include the Kendrick Lamar-centric "Never Gonna Catch Me" and the smooth, terrifying "Coronus, the Terminator." It never wavers from its topic, but approaches it with an alarming amount of emotion that might just echo the experience of death itself.
