10 Modern Classics By Old Bands

5. Dark Necessities - Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers had a nasty habit of changing guitarists at an alarming pace. After 9 long years with the band, John Frusciante announced his departure from the group citing creative differences. With new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer in the band's ranks, many questioned how the band would continue on without Frusciante's emotive guitar work.

On the group's next record I'm With You, fans' receptions were either lukewarm or perplexed at the band's direction. While the record contained bangers, it was clear that the band were still finding their groove. However, the release of "Dark Necessities" in 2016 showed that the band had finally found their groove with a funky rock romp.

Flea's bass is practically the lead instrument as it locks in with drummer Chad Smith perfectly. Frontman Anthony Kiedis's lyrics are also gritty as he details his days living off of narcotics and getting into extremely dangerous shenanigans along the way. While Klinghoffer's performance isn't face-melting, his use of effects and tasty solo are a great demonstration of playing to the band's strengths.

Many fans were overjoyed when it was announced Frusciante was to return to the Peppers this year, but "Dark Necessities" is still one of the greatest tunes the Frusciante-less Peppers have ever written.
