10 More Great Rock Music Singles That Never Appeared On An Album
2. Black Night - Deep Purple
Even though they have existed since before the dawn of time itself, Deep Purple have only released four singles without an accompanying album.
All coming out between 1969 and 1971, these four tracks all had varying degrees of appeal. Neither Emmaretta nor Hallelujah found success in the charts, whilst Strange Kind of Woman reached number 8. The most popular by far, however, was 1970's Black Night.
The product of the record company asking for a single to promote the album Deep Purple in Rock, Black Night was supposedly modelled on Ricky Nelson's arrangement of the song Summertime. Whatever its inspiration was, it worked, as the song is still the band's highest-charting in the UK.
It's also their fourth most-played track live, despite the fact that it was never released as part of a standard issue album. 25 years later, it found its way onto a compilation album called 24 Carat Purple, which is brilliant, and an anniversary edition of Deep Purple in Rock.
Should the executives have hurriedly placed Black Night onto the original album? Well, it went to number 4 without it, so they were probably alright not to.
