10 More Perfect 2000s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs

7. Lateralus - Tool (2001)

This is a damn long record. You need a good 80 minutes plus to really get into it, and you're probably going to want to leave time for replays. Many of the songs are so intriguing that even with their seven minute plus run times, you're left feeling short changed and craving more.

This record could certainly fall under the category of metal, but perhaps, alternative/progressive metal might be a more accurate description. There are very heavy elements at times, but Maynard James Keenan has always had ability to judge when to rein it in - singing in a very understated and tender way at times but leaning into the rage at others.

The Patient, in particular, feels more like an alternative grunge track from the early '90s, rather than a song released at the start of the 2000s. This was when the band really displayed their ability to take on the mantel of a progressive group, it's almost sounds like a whole grunge album compressed into one song. Despite the lengthy run times, the tracks regularly ebb and flow, keeping you thoroughly invested.

The jewel in the crown comes in the form of Schism. As soon as the distinctive bass riff drops in you are struck by a sense of urgency. The song instinctively feels like it's building to something huge, and you cant help but feel impatient to hear Keenan drop some of his more aggressive vocals. He does not disappoint.
