10 Most Blatant Ripoffs In Rock History
1. Why Don't You Get a Job - The Offspring
Part of the appeal that comes with punk rock is taking the piss out of the traditional rock and roll structures of the time. If you had asked anyone from the early days of the punk and hardcore scenes to name their favorite Journey song or something, you'd probably get a rant about the commercialization of rock and roll than an actual endorsement. Then again, sometimes the best way to mock rock and roll is to use their own tropes against them.
While the Offspring were already well on the way to being pop punk titans after their album Smash, Americana had a bit of a departure from their usual sound with Why Don't You Get a Job?. For most of the runtime, it's almost as if Dexter Holland is trying to sound annoying, as the melody has the same kind of awkward cadence that you would find in a nursery rhyme. This wasn't just any catchy tune though...this was one of the biggest bands in the world.
From skin to core, this entire song is a carbon copy of the Beatles' Ob La Di Ob La Da, which is either one of the best or the worst Beatles' songs depending on which fan you end up asking. While the Beatles have done a lot more good than harm for the rock scene throughout their tenure, it's this kind of song that makes you at least see where those naysayers are coming from.
