10 Most Controversial Metal Albums Of The 21st Century

4. Holy Wood - Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson is one of the few artists who practically lives off of controversy. For god's sake, his name alone already conjures up both sex and evil before you even hear a note of his music. Though plenty of tabloid stories have been made about Marilyn over the years, Holy Wood saw him doubling down in the midst of a horrific tragedy.

Not long after Marilyn was doing the rounds promoting his previous effort Mechanical Animals, the Columbine massacre shook the United States to its core. Adding insult to injury, Manson had a hard time adjusting to the tragedy after initial reports pointed out that the shooters were big fans of his "demonic" form of music. Manson may have ducked in the shadows for a while, but Holy Wood showed him back in business as America's favorite antichrist.

Rather than tiptoeing around the issue and toning things down, Holy Wood shows Manson out in full force, with song titles like "Disposable Teens" reaffirming him as a maniacal figure. As if the high school association wasn't bad enough, the release of the music video for "The Fight Song" showed Manson and his fans taking over and demolishing a high school football field. There's always been a fluctuating line as far as taste goes, but when it comes to stirring up controversy, Holy Wood proved that there are no breaks on the Manson locomotive.
