10 Most Depressing Music Videos Of The 21st Century

6. Happier - Marshmellow Ft. Bastille

If there's one sure fire way to get viewers sobbing their eyes out, it's to get us attached to an adorable little pooch, then kill it off in front of us. The video for the song has absolutely nothing to do with the content of the lyrics, presumably because the director didn't feel that the topic of relationship breakups was quite depressing enough.

Instead we see a timid young girl being gifted a puppy as a present, dressed with a yellow bow matching her favourite colour. We are then allowed to see the adorable pooch bring some happiness to the girl's life, despite the horrors of growing up to be a teen with braces. Then the girl comes home from school to realise the dog ain't acting as it should be.

For a full minute we are then served up the most manipulatively depressing action ever put to screen, as we watch every finite detail of the dog being put down. The camera refuses to pull away from the teen's grief, with the images of the father carrying the dog to its death in the foreground adding to the demoralising situation.

The video's conclusion is meant to be uplifting, with the now grown up girl having a daughter of her own, and now smiling away without a care. That is until her Father arrives, giving his granddaughter a puppy of her own, the cycle of misery seemingly set in motion for all time.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
