10 Most Depressing Music Videos Of The 21st Century

3. Hurt - Johnny Cash

The final heartbreaking video for the 'Man in Black', this video resonates with the viewer in ways no one would expect from a cover of a largely forgotten song. But as the initial songwriter Trent Reznor acknowledged, the manner in which the music video is constructed makes this no longer his song, but very much a Johnny Cash number.

With a mix of archival footage, christian imagery and the wrinkled face of Cash seamlessly edited together, we view the full life story of the man in black, right through to his dying moments. This is Cash's farewell, full of regret and sadness for all the mistakes he has made in his life, while pondering if his existence any longer has a point.

While Cash's genuine emotion exudes through the screen, it is footage and photos of his late wife June that really hits home. Like the song itself, the video builds up to an epic crescendo, before finishing with Cash closing the piano one last time. It's extraordinary stuff, but so damn sad.

With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
