10 Most Disturbing Hard Rock Songs Ever Released
1. Closer - Nine Inch Nails
As the '90s wore on, most of the rock audience were used to a good shock. Though bands like Marilyn Manson were still in the making, everyone from KISS to Alice Cooper to King Diamond had made creepy musical passages that increased listeners' tolerance for frightening subject matters. Then again, with all that preparation, we still weren't prepared for something like "Closer."
Coming off of Nine Inch Nails' grim masterpiece The Downward Spiral, the entire project is aptly titled, as it makes you feel like you're riding down the slippery pathway down to Hell. Trent Reznor may have had a plan in mind, but "Closer" takes the deadly sin of lust to the nth degree. Rock and roll certainly isn't short on songs about sex, but there is nothing truly sexy about this song. From one line to the next, Reznor is a man fueled by his lust, willing to do anything if it means reaching his twisted state of nirvana.
With countless amounts of audio glitches and cold synthesizers, every facet of this song brings you closer to the edge, as Reznor lures into his toxic environment and refuses to let you out. It may be one thing to write a song designed to scare people, but it's something completely different to make a song that sounds infatuated with the evil it's about to inflict.
