7. Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
When it comes to the grunge scene, the musicians were a lot more hands on in the promotional process. While not really being the most photogenic people in the world, the videos that were popping up around this time were a lot more artful than they had any right to be, from Nirvana's Come As You Are to Smashing Pumpkins' Disarm. Soundgarden were no exception to the rule, but when they did hit it big, they took all of their avant garde tendencies with them.
That's not to say Black Hole Sun is even a bad song, being one of the defining pieces of music of the entire '90s and a brilliant showcase for Chris Cornell's songwriting. Once you see the visuals on here though, they're impossible to forget. Complete with a wide array of colors, most of the non-performance parts of this video feel like they're lifted from a David Lynch fever dream.
Centered around a typical suburban neighborhood, everyone's pulled-back smiles are off-putting in the best way possible, as we are treated to a mother chopping up fish and a young girl eating ice cream before the sky erupts into a tornado pulling in everything in its path. For as much as the images themselves don't make any logical sense, there's no way you're going to mistake this for anything else.
