10 Most Divisive Albums In Rock Music History
6. Parachutes - Coldplay
So how do you get to put out a divisive album on your first step up to the plate? Since there's no one who's really heard your extensive musical catalog just yet, it's impossible to really get someone super disappointed off of the first thing they hear from you. Then again, Parachutes by Coldplay got a lot more flak back in the day more for what it represents than for the music itself.
You see, at this point, Britpop was starting to wane a bit from popular culture. Even though you had bands like Travis and even Radiohead pulling from the Britpop formula, this is the moment where stuff got a little too poppy for most people to take seriously. All it took was one listen to a song like Yellow for some fans to just jump off of the Britpop bandwagon entirely, thinking that the genre had officially given way to sellout material.
When you just listen to the record on its own merits though, this is a fairly nice set of songs with Chris Martin getting a feel for the role of a lead singer. There's also a bit of an airy feel that is more reminiscent of the best parts of Radiohead's '90s material on songs like Spies and We Never Change. And since Radiohead weren't even sounding like Radiohead at this point, we will gladly take whatever we can get.
