10 Most Divisive Albums In Rock Music History

5. Caress of Steel - Rush

As Rush's career has gone on, the rabid fanbase that they have had has only managed to grow stronger. Though they were known to be the band for nerds back in the day, the brand loyalty that these fans have for these Canadian icons isn't going to be going away any time soon. Those same fans did not end up showing up back in the day for Caress of Steel though.

Whereas you'd normally find a ton of people defending this thing nowadays, Neil Peart's ambition for longer songs might have been a bit too ambitious for its own good at this point, leading to songs that are a lot more trippy than most people were willing to listen to. Looking back on the project, Geddy Lee was also a little wary about the final results, saying that the band must have been pretty high when writing a majority of the record.

And it's not like the band didn't feel the repercussions of this when they hit the road for this album either, with most of the gigs not being well attended and most of the road crew taking to call it the Down the Tubes tour. Being sandwiched in between two of the greatest albums of Rush's '70s run, Caress of Steel is still a relatively black sheep. Still, it's better to have a black sheep than something that's completely dead in the water.
