10 Most Emotional Rock Albums Ever Made

2. Jar of Flies - Alice in Chains

When you're talking about the grunge scene, you also have to talk about the drug abuse that went on in the scene. As much as Kurt Cobain may have written some amazing songs, people seem to always bring up his heroin habit and how it contributed to him getting more and more unhappy and strung out as the years went on. Kurt Cobain wasn't the only person with a monkey on his back though, and Jar of Flies was when Layne Staley started to reach his breaking point.

After trying to cleanse himself on the album Dirt by confronting his drug habit, Layne was starting to crumble under the pressure, and these acoustic cuts paint him in a pretty dark light. Aside from sounding gorgeous with acoustic instruments, Layne gets a little too personal on some of these songs, as Nutshell talks about the misfortune of being in the public eye and wondering if he would feel better dead.

Though there are some moments where Jerry Cantrell tries to speak to him through song on No Excuses, the whole EP just sounds like the last hurrah for Layne, with the next album barely featuring him at all before the band went on hiatus and Staley died of an overdose. There's an unspoken rule that metalheads don't really need to cry to show their emotions, but just try to make it through something like Don't Follow and not have your heart break in two for Layne.
