10 Most Essential Deftones Songs
7. 7 Words
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEVik1nJb68This punky track, taken from their classic debut Adrenaline, is one of Deftones’ angriest songs, a fact Chino Moreno has freely admitted. He has been quoted as saying "I wrote it back when I was 16 years old. It was about being oppressed by people around me, the authorities, I felt like the whole world was against me. It was like I was lashing out at those people."
One listen to the song confirms this. It’s seemingly written for the moshpit, and mirrors the album’s title - as you listen to it you can’t help but feel a rush of adrenaline.
Apparently also in a rush of adrenaline, the album was recorded incredibly quickly. Deftones had been a band in one form or another for over six years by the time they went into the studio to record it, meaning that the songs had been honed and perfected over the course of hundreds of live shows.
The brevity of the recording also meant that the band didn’t take a lot of time to change songs halfway through sessions, something they would do more and more as their career progressed.
This approach led to a remarkably unfussy and uncluttered album, which clocks in at just over 40 minutes (discounting its hidden track).
7 Words is a stand out, and still elicits a rapturous audience response when played live, despite being almost two decades old.
