In more recent years, Chino Moreno has experimented with a variety of side projects outside of Deftones. His first dalliance was in 2005, with Team Sleep, who came into existence around the time of third album White Pony. More recently he joined up with former Isis members (the LA-based post-metal band that is, not the self-proclaimed Islamic caliphate) to form Palms, who released their debut in 2013. But probably his most interesting side-project is ††† (you can call them Crosses though), who also feature Far guitarist Shaun Lopez. Proponents of one of the more stupidly monikered genres of recent times, witch house, ††† have so far released two EPs and one album of spooky electronic-tinged metal.

Their sonic influence has also slipped into Deftones’ music, and Entombed is a prime example of this. Its mix of electronic beats and real drums has become one of †††’s most defining features, and it’s one heavily used on Entombed too.

The song is also one of Deftones’ poppiest, with a gently tapped lead guitar that sets the tone beautifully. It is a love song at heart, but as with most Deftones songs, the lyrics sow the seeds of doubt as to how much love actually exists here: “From the day you arrived, I’ve remained by your side, in chains, entombed”.
