10 Most Expensive Music Videos Ever Made

7. 'Make Me Like You' - Gwen Stefani

Cost: $4m ($4.2m with inflation)

Release: 2016

Ex-No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani's 2016 hit is the most recent here. That wouldn't be immediately obvious if one dropped the YouTube quality to 480p and pretended it wasn't shot in HD. 'Make Me Like You' is sheer, 70/80s-influenced disco pop bliss.

It's the best of Kylie Minogue and Madonna all rolled into one, and it's all topped off by Stefani's sultry vocal style. Yes, there's no denying it, this writer is a fan, but what about the actual video? Well, it's a smorgasbord of accomplished backing dancers, switches between monochrome retro backdrops and splashes of colour, and everything fits in nicely with the music.

If there's one minor complaint to be lobbied at this one, it's that $4m budget. Who knows what they spent that on when everything looks like something from a Marilyn Monroe fever dream; a later, extended cut used during the 58th Annual Grammy Awards cost $12m to produce.
