10 Most Expensive Rock & Metal Albums Ever Made

5. Metallica: The Black Album - $1,850,000

Metallica's 1991 The Black Album is a rollicking ride full to the brim with great songs, from "Enter Sandman", to "The Unforgiven", to "Nothing Else Matters." You'd think making such a fantastic album would have been fun for the guys involved. Alas, this was not the case. Not only did the album cost nearly two million dollars to make, it also coincided with the divorce of three band members and clashes with producer Bob Rock.

Bob Rock wanted the band to work as a group, rather than recording their bits separately, as they had done on previous albums. This change often saw Rock fall out with the band over the direction of the album. To make matters worse, during the recording Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammet and Jason Newstead all found themselves going through divorces.

The album was eventually finished, however, and the music world is better for it. It was remixed three times, and the emotional tole hit the band hard, but The Black Album went on to become Metallica's most commercially successful album and an instant audience favourite.

As for Bob Rock, he went on to produce the band's album St. Anger, which was at best a flop. Fans started a petition to get rid of him, because he had too much influence over the band, and he never returned to them. But at least he got to work on The Black Album...
