10 Most Expensive Rock & Metal Albums Ever Made

4. Tears For Fears: The Seeds Of Love - $1,500,000 ($3 Million Today)

Tears for Fears are a pop-rock band from England whose new wave synth sound was a key aspect of the 80s music scene. Their third studio album, The Seeds Of Love, was released in 1989 to great reviews and air play, but looking behind the scenes makes it a wonder it was released at all.

The first rendition of the album was recorded in 1986, but the band weren't happy with the results and they scrapped it. Chris Hughes, who had produced their last two records, was brought in to get the project moving, but conflicts arose about the direction of the album. Vocalist and song-writer Roland Orzabal wanted to take the band in more organic direction, steering clear of their previous pop-synth sound.

Because of the creative clashes both Hughes and keyboardist Ian Stanley left the project completely. Orzabal and Curt Smith decided to produce it themselves and brought in a wide array of session musicians to fill in the gaps. When it was eventually completed, the whole process cost a whopping 1.5 million dollars (their previous album reportedly cost only $70,000), and the animosity that had grown between Orzabal and Smith during recording made sure they didn't work together for over a decade.

The Seeds Of Love was released to great reviews and is currently certified platinum in both the UK and the US. And on a happy note, Orzabal and Smith are back working and touring together, and their issues are now far behind them.
