10 Most Hated Classic Rock Songs (From Great Bands)
4. Mumbo - Paul McCartney
The Beatles' breakup at the end of the 60's was a truly dark day for the rock community at large. While the band would no longer be making music together, the members were still making some amazing stuff as solo artists, with George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" and John Lennon's breathtaking "Imagine." While Paul McCartney started off equally strong with the song "Maybe I'm Amazed" and the eccentric Ram album, things started to take a turn for the weird once he formed a new group.
After a few years of making music by himself with his wife Linda, Paul was missing the camaraderie that came with having a group rather than being by yourself. Drafting Denny Laine from the Moody Blues among others, Paul went into the studio to cut Wings' first album Wild Life, which had a bit more sore spots than you remember.
Though the album has a beautiful message to John Lennon on "Dear Friend," much of the front half is loaded with jams that don't really go anywhere, with "Mumbo" being the worst. The song is basically just a good guitar riff combined with what can only be described as McCartney ad-libbing lyrics with no real rhyme or reason. While Paul would eventually find his groove again with Band on the Run, the first offering from this new group ended up being a meandering mess.
