3. Come Clean - Puddle Of Mudd
Most of the artists who make it to the top tend to have good artistic instincts. Whether it be a good knack for songwriting or just a steady way of constructing their songs, plenty of artists are at least able to build up a rapport with the audience that makes them a trustworthy musician to deliver the goods. However, there are also some acts that make it to the top by seemingly taking every wrong step. Enter: Puddle of Mudd.
Now, that's not to say that there was no hope for these guys going in. In fact, you could totally see why songs like Control and Blurry would actually fit on modern rock radio at the turn of the century. As opposed to just a steep decline into mediocrity, Come Clean eroded over time worse than anyone remembered. Instead of going with a sure-fire producer, the blessing of Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst ended up getting this band a record deal, where they proceeded to get more strung out.
Seeing as he was on a big label, it's almost like Wes Scantlin also stopped caring about writing songs, with She Hates Me sounding like a pale imitation of Kurt Cobain being drunk off his ass during a performance. Even though the early grunge sound of Seattle was in the rearview, this was the nostalgic trip that no one really wanted to go on.
