10 Most Hated Hard Rock Songs (From Great Bands)
2. Bugs - Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam have always been known as a band that does whatever the hell they want. While the band definitely have a certain style of hard rock that has related with millions of people, from time to time they like to dip their toes into more unconventional territory. Sometimes it turns out really well...and sometimes you get tracks like "Bugs."
The band's third album Vitalogy was already pretty contentious given the band's struggles with fame, but this track was sonic manifestation of all their deep-seated anger. Using anger as inspiration has always worked great in a hard rock context, but this 3-minute long dissonance sounds like an active recording of spite. Instead of putting out another kickass rocker, this song stemmed from Eddie Vedder finding a junky accordion and putting together an arrangement about bugs crawling up his wall.
The lyrics were probably meant to sound a bit unhinged, but the uncomfortable backing track is just weird enough that the song goes too far the other way into off-putting. Though Vitalogy did have some great songs on it like "NothingMan" and "Spin the Black Circle," this is a song that has prompted fans to hit the skip button from the second it comes on.
