3. Elegia - New Order (1985)

Who says you need lyrics to convey an emotion? Whatever it was the New Order lot were tapping into, the haunting atmosphere created in the track Elegia conjures up a swirling sea of conflicting feelings.

It bares a striking similarity to Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, slowed down of course and with a slightly different melody, but never the less the similarities are there to be noticed. Due to the affiliation Tubular Bells had with The Exorcist, it's no wonder Elegia has that spooky sense of dread attached to it.

Despite the haunting nature of the many synthesis and keyboard melodies, it's the defiant nature of the persistent guitar melody that you really latch on to. Unwavering in a sea of all the spooky and sinister ambiance of the track the guitar melody is like the bastion of hope in all the darkness.

Without lyrics, the track doesn't profess to target a specific emotion but for anyone listening to it, it's clear that they were channeling something powerful, it's damn evocative music.

Who didn't find the funeral of Will Byers in Stranger Things, all that more impactful with this track behind it?
