10 Most Heartbreaking Tragedies In Rock Music

1. John Lennon's Murder

There's no real way to quantify tragedies in the music world. Despite some deaths and accidents having tragic stories behind them, there's no specific pattern as to how much someone's life impacted the fans that heard their music. However, out of all the rock and rollers that were lost before their time, John Lennon's death seemed to shake the entire world on that December evening.

Radiating after finishing his return to form album Double Fantasy, Lennon had really turned a corner in his life. Instead of the brutish manly force of the early days of the Beatles, the Intellectual Beatle had settled into his domestic life happily, as he cared for his new son Sean. Wanting to see his son before he went to bed, Lennon return to the Dakota early with his wife Yoko Ono when Mark David Chapman fired at him.

Though police arrived on the scene and transported him to the hospital, Lennon had lost too much blood to actually survive the horrific attack. Without resisting arrest, Chapman later revealed that he killed Lennon to gain fame and attention. After the news broke, the influx of tears from fans spread like wildfire, from people congregating in front of the Dakota chanting Give Peace a Chance to a moment of silence being held a few days later to celebrate John's memory. Compared to the other shocking moments in music history, the death of John Lennon is one of the most senseless acts of violence directed towards a man who had finally seemed to find peace.
