10 Most Iconic British Frontmen In Rock Music History
2. Ziggy Stardust - The Spiders From Mars
Again this might be a controversial entry, despite his many collaborations over the years, David Bowie was a solo artist. But, his character Ziggy Stardust fronted The Spiders From Mars between 1972 and 1973, and the Stardust legacy has been one of the most influential in rock music to date.
There isn't many more striking images than Ziggy, with a red mullet, star smattered, space boots and a spandex jumpsuit to rival that of any Marvel super hero. His first appearance was on the 10 February 1972 in a London pub, to a relatively small audience but less than a year later Ziggy would be playing in front of screaming crowds of thousands.
The concept for the spaceman from mars, was that of a gender fluid alien who had come to deliver a message of love and hope to earth, a pretty out there concept for the 1970s...
Ziggy Stardust was a whole array of influences rolled into one, with Marc Bolan's Glam rock look, infused with a Japanese theatre aesthetic, all turned up to 11. And, with the musical sensibilities of The Velvet Underground and Iggy Pop, only the great Bowie could pull together all of these components to create one of the most Iconic stage personas in music history.
