10 Most Iconic Keyboard Songs In Rock Music
1. Saturday Night's Alright - Elton John
Part of the problem with piano led songs is that they're not really supposed to rock all that often. For most bands, breaking out the piano is when you decide to turn things down a notch and create the more ballad heavy side of your sound. And Elton John certainly had his fair share of ballads in his arsenal, but he could also rock like no one else when given the opportunity.
Breaking out the kind of Little Richard style chops, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting practically puts you in the scene of a drunken brawl, where mayhem is breaking out all around and you're trying to save your own skin. Although Elton does have classical training from his days in school, he takes full advantage of the percussive side of the piano, banging the hell out of it until it's practically pleading for mercy towards the tail end of the song. And while the song doesn't shy away from the distorted guitars, the six string almost has to keep up with Elton half the time, being almost too energetic for its own good.
Then again, this was just the right kind of piano song by rock standards, where all bets are off and you're just watching a band cutting loose in the studio. There have been more than enough guitar heroes that have come and gone in rock history, but in terms of raw aggression, Elton should be in the same conversation as those players in terms of pure power.
