10 Most Overrated Metal Bands Of All Time
7. Yngwie Malmsteen
By all measures, metal in the '80s was the height of the virtuoso guitar god. Ever since Eddie Van Halen broadened the playing field of what you could do, there were musicians left and right trying to capture the same type of insane energy by playing a million notes per second. And then we found out just how fast you could go with Yngwie Malmsteen, and you'd be surprised how little people actually care.
Despite being one of the top shredders in the community, a lot of Yngwie's playing goes too far in the opposite direction, playing one too many notes until he starts sounding borderline inarticulate in some songs. And while we're on that subject, Yngwie is about as basic of a one trick pony as you can find, taking the typical tropes of a rock guitarist and sprinkling in some bits and pieces of neo classical scales into the mix.
Seriously, try listening to any one of Malmsteen's projects and tell me you don't hear him going through the same damn scale across every single one of his albums. Combine that with a bit of cocky attitude here and there, and you've got the recipe for the rock diva that no one wants to relive. Sure, you might be able to play fast, but good God, can you do absolutely anything else, my dude?
