10 Most Overrated Metal Bands Of All Time
6. KISS
It's never really a band's fault that they're overrated. Sometimes musicians just want to play music for themselves and not have to worry about the throngs of screaming fans that insist on stanning for them 24/7. You can't say that that logic applies to KISS though. This kind of hype machine is a product of their own design.
Since day one, you can't say that these guys weren't original, taking the idea of theatrical rock and amplifying it to the next level, with one of the single greatest live shows in rock history. Once you peel back the layers of smoke and fog though, there's a lot of hollow material in between the cracks, with even their classic albums having a lot more spotty moments than you probably remember.
For every great song that comes and goes like Detroit Rock City or Love Gun, you also have to deal with the cheesiness of something like Great Expectations or the forced sing-along energy of Tomorrow and Tonight. Also, never forget that by becoming a KISS fan, you're signing up more for a business model rather than just the love of the music. Up until this point, it seems like Gene Simmons has been more focused on keeping the brand of KISS more alive than the actual music. Yeah, because that's what you come to all the great metal bands for...capitalism and sales figures. How much more rock and roll can you get than that?
