10 Most Popular ANTI-Rockstars

8. John Entwistle - The Who

Out of all the traditional rock star roles, the bass player tends to be the most faceless in any rock band. Though there are exceptions with people like Sting, Flea, and other one-named low enders, most of the people behind the four strings don't really have as much importance as the singer or the lead guitarist. Then again, John Entwistle's role was so limited onstage that it almost became a parody of itself.

That's not to say that Entwistle isn't an integral part of the Who though. Across every single one of these Mod rockers albums in the '60s and '70s, Entwistle annihilated his bass much like a lead guitarist would, along with writing a handful of tunes like on My Wife and Whiskey Man. However, when it came time for him to actually take to the stage, he tended to stand fairly still and focus on his craft, which couldn't compete next to Roger Daltrey swinging his mic and Keith Moon's over the top drumming.

Hell, their biggest hit My Generation had a bass solo in it, and yet most people might not have noticed because of Entwistle's reputation to hang in the background. By the time they got to playing bigger gigs like Woodstock, it got to be too much of a joke that Entwistle would wear various costumes to compensate for his lack of movement. For a band that's all about the power behind rock and roll, Entwistle was always the one guy who looked like he couldn't be asked to care.
