10 Most Shocking Moments In Rock Music History
1. John Lennon's Murder
Not many other '60s musicians can claim to have the star power that John Lennon had. Despite being one of the least approachable members of the Beatles, the tabloids couldn't seem to keep their eyes off of the man, whether it was for his relationship with Yoko Ono or his ability to write some of the greatest peace anthems ever made. Just when he was about to reach his second wind, it all came to an end with a gunshot.
After years of being away from music, Lennon's album Double Fantasy felt like a true return to form, as he settled into his everyday life as a husband and father. When working on the final touches of the album, Lennon made his way home with Yoko when Mark David Chapman confronted him and fired five shots at him. Though Lennon managed to make it to the hospital, he was pronounced dead minutes after arrival due to losing too much blood.
As opposed to the other casualties of his colleagues like Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, Lennon's death felt akin to losing a family member, given the amount of amazing music the Beatles had given us over the years. Although Lennon will never meet with us on this earthly plain of existence again, he has turned into nothing short of a musical prophet ever since that horrific day.
