10 Most Shocking Moments In Rock Music History

2. Kurt Cobain's Suicide

For as many times that rockers pass away in their prime, it's almost understandable. As much as fans might hate to see their favorite artists flame out like they do, the idea of having substances get the better of them is just the harsh reality of the rock and roll lifestyle. It's a bit of a different story when the death comes from their own hand.

Just as Nirvana were hitting their stride as one of the biggest bands in the world, Kurt Cobain was found in his home after shooting himself with a shotgun. Though Cobain was already in a bad way with his constant reliance on heroin, not even his close friends were ready for this big a loss. Then again, this wasn't just some ordinary rock star casualty either.

Coming together much like a vigil, most of the grieving sessions for Cobain's demise was the equivalent to the Day the Music Died, with both people congregating in Seattle and bands grieving while on the road. Going forward, Cobain's death seemed to mark the end of the grunge movement as a whole, with most of the subsequent acts never being able to gain as much steam as the old guard. While icons may come and go in rock music, the idea of the Voice of a Generation being gone in an instant was a bit too much for your average listener to bear.
