10 Most Trippy Albums Of All Time
9. White Pony - Deftones
When nu metal was dawning during the late 90's, Deftones were one of the most exciting names making waves on the scene. From their unusual melodic structures to their chunky guitar tones, the band had everything you could have asked for from a rap-rock hybrid band. At the same time, the band weren't planning on staying in that one genre for long.
Being influenced by more experimental acts like Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails, the band set out to make something much darker while still having an ethereal vibe. Along with the new inspirational templates, the band also have admitted to being in a more narcotically imbalanced state of mind when it came to deciding on the album's themes. The actual meaning behind the title of the album is a reference to a variety of drugs, which Chino Moreno has described as being either cocaine or crystal meth.
Regardless of what was in their system, the band created beautiful sonic tapestries with this record, from the uncomfortable atmosphere of "Digital Bath" to the chilling soundscapes found in "Change." With lyrics that frame stories of seedy behaviour, White Pony has become not only an essential Deftones album, but one of the greatest albums of the nu metal genre.
