10 Most Un-Metal Songs By Major Metal Artists

8. The Nurse Who Loved Me - A Perfect Circle

The entire concept of A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step was almost clinical in its construction. For as much as songs like the Outsider brought the pain with Maynard James Keenan's mammoth vocal performance, there was also some odd downtempo moments that left most metalheads befuddled by the end. Once you sit with it long enough though, you'll start to realize the genius you're actually listening to.

Being a deconstruction of the dangers of substance abuse, the choice to cover Failure's The Nurse Who Loved Me is almost too perfect a fit. On the other hand, the pop-friendly melody of this song seems absolutely gorgeous coming out of Maynard's mouth. Given that you don't really hear stuff like this from Maynard nearly as often, it almost feels oddly unsettling as he talks about his romantic affair with his doctor. In fact, that might actually be where the scary parts of this song come in.

For as much as the song might feel euphoric in the moment, this is also Maynard singing on the other side of sanity, as he's basically resorted to animalistic dependence on his nurse to give him the fix that he needs. The high might be nice for now, but this is the sound of going just a little too far down the rabbithole.
