10 Most Underrated Albums In Rock Music History

9. #1 Record - Big Star

I mean, just from the name of this band alone, you knew they were tempting fate, right? When you name your band Big Star, you're either going to look like the most pretentious band in the world or embarrass yourself by no one listening to your music. And on #1 Record, Big Star did neither by turning in a letter perfect power pop album.

You have to remember that this was years before people like the Cars were arriving on the scene, meaning the songs of Chris Bell and Alex Chilton cemented the sounds of big hooks alongside rock production. Coming out of the South, there's a lot of homespun magic in a lot of these songs, complimented by the kind of teenage angst that you can only get from rock and roll like on Thirteen and The Ballad of El Goodo.

There are even a few moments of acoustic cuts, where it sounds like the band took the lessons that they learned from the '60s bands they loved on songs like Watch the Sunrise. And even the great songs on here don't even give Big Star credit, with In the Street being reworked by Cheap Trick for the theme song of That 70s Show. In a sense, this is still a #1 Record though. It didn't sell nearly enough copies, but if you're looking for some of the best hooks in rock, no other record comes close.
