10 Most Underrated Albums In Rock Music History

8. Southern Accents - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

At the start of the '80s, things were starting to look up for Tom Petty. After winning his lawsuit from his record company and becoming a superstar on the back of Damn the Torpedoes, his next few albums saw him transitioning into the MTV era gracefully on songs like You Got Lucky. Then again, when you're riding that high you can't see the brick wall you're about to run into.

Originally intended to be a double record, Southern Accents was a patchwork job if there ever was one, with Tom Petty bringing in super producer Jimmy Iovine to put the pieces together for a good album. While not as many knockout classics like Refugee in tow, this is still one of the most engaging listens of Petty's career, with songs that could stand alongside his best like Rebels and Dogs on the Run.

Aside from some of the more dated production in some areas, the real highlights of this record are the ballads like the title track and the Best of Everything, which sound absolutely beautiful. Even as the years go by, Tom's heartfelt sincerity hasn't failed him. And time has also been fairly kind to this record, with each song aging like a fine wine as the years go by. Tom has said that he wasn't proud of the record at first but was happy with the record it became, and who's going to argue with the man himself?
